Bitcoiners are calling on the encrypted messaging app Signal to integrate Bitcoin payments. The campaign, known as “Bitcoin for Signal,” is led by Bitcoin developer Cashu and has gained support from high-profile figures, including Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block.
“@signalapp should use Bitcoin,” Dorsey posted on X, endorsing the campaign’s goal to bring private Bitcoin payments into the popular app. Signal currently serves about 70 million users worldwide, known for its focus on secure, private communication.

The campaign suggests using Cashu’s Chaumian Ecash protocol, a system designed to enable private Bitcoin transactions. Supporters say this would give Signal users a faster, more secure way to send money without leaving the app.
I’m one of the judges who gave this project a well-deserved first place at the @btcplusplus hackathon.
I’ve been wanting to try MobileCoin. But it’s such a failure I can’t even buy any.@signalapp needs to accept reality and just add Bitcoin support.

Mixed Reactions from the Crypto Community
Not everyone agrees with the idea. Some privacy advocates argue that Bitcoin’s base layer lacks privacy features, which could clash with Signal’s mission to protect user anonymity.
I love @signalapp
I love @CashuBTC
This is a match in heaven
Let’s make this happen!@mer__edith 🙏 https://t.co/jOaEl5nRkF

“Jack, why use a fully public blockchain for a privacy chat?” asked José Pedro Sousa, an engineer at Aztec Network. Others suggested using Monero (XMR) or Zcash (ZEC), which are built for private transactions.
Jack why do you think bitcoin is private?
It is not encrypted at all.
It is a trackable public ledger
I’m surprised you are unaware of this

Still, several Bitcoin developers, including Peter Todd, Calle, and Pavol Rusnak believe Signal should move away from its current crypto option, MobileCoin (MOB). They claim MobileCoin is too centralized and limited. Todd called it a “failure,” adding that he couldn’t even buy the token.
This would jeopardize the privacy of Signal users.
If Bitcoin had any layer of native privacy maybe. I guess there is a sillier thing they could’ve done than MobileCoin…Bitcoin.

A Bigger Push for Private Payments
The timing of this campaign is notable. It comes just after the European Union debated a law that could weaken end-to-end encryption by forcing apps to scan private messages for harmful content.
For many Bitcoin supporters, integrating Bitcoin into Signal would be more than a tech upgrade. It’s a stand for digital freedom and privacy. Whether Signal adopts it or not, the discussion highlights a growing effort to make Bitcoin part of daily private communication.
