A First Look: ERC-8004 and AI Agents
In the short term, the dAI team is focused on introducing a new technical standard called ERC-8004. Standards on Ethereum act as blueprints that developers use to create tools and applications. ERC-20, for example, gave rise to thousands of tokens by providing a shared framework. Similarly, ERC-8004 aims to define how AI agents, or autonomous pieces of software that can perform tasks, are defined. Also, it can send and receive payments seamlessly across Ethereum.

🚨 Ethereum recently proposed ERC-8004 (EIP-8004, Trustless Agents)
A new standard to give AI agents identity, reputation, and validation on-chain.
This could be the foundation of the machine economy.

The standard will be revealed at Devconnect, Ethereum’s developer gathering in November. By setting clear rules for AI transactions, Ethereum hopes to make it easier for both developers and companies. The goal is to adopt decentralized AI. Imagine an AI assistant that can book a flight, pay for services, or trade assets. This is without needing to rely on a centralized platform. ERC-8004 could make that vision more practical.

The Bigger Picture: Decentralized AI Infrastructure
While ERC-8004 is a first step, the Ethereum Foundation’s long-term goal is even more ambitious. The dAI team wants to build a decentralized infrastructure for artificial intelligence. This means spreading data, models, and decision-making power across a global network instead of concentrating them in the hands of a few companies.

This approach is in line with broader trends. Earlier this year, decentralized compute networks like Akash and Render saw rising demand as developers looked for alternatives to traditional cloud providers. According to Messari, the decentralized AI market is expected to grow rapidly, with billions in value potentially flowing into blockchain-based AI services over the next five years. By anchoring AI on Ethereum, the Foundation is positioning the network as a neutral, secure, and programmable environment for one of the world’s fastest-growing technologies.
