The attack occurred in November 2023 after the victim had hosted a crypto-related event downtown. Police say the suspects followed him home, abducted him, and forced him to reveal his passwords in the desert.
This case, which only came to light on May 10, is now being prosecuted with two 16-year-old suspects from Florida facing serious charges, including robbery, kidnapping, and extortion. One teen is being held on $4 million bail, while the other is under house arrest. A third suspect reportedly fled the country. Prosecutors plan to try the minors as adults, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June.
A New Threat: Physical Crypto Crime
Digital asset crime has often been associated with phishing, SIM swaps, and online scams. But this case marks a disturbing trend: real-world violence. According to a report by local outlet 8 News Now, the teens threatened the victim by claiming they had his father and would kill him if he didn’t comply. After emptying his accounts of crypto and NFTs, the man reportedly walked five miles through the desert to find help.
Crypto theft is evolving. It’s not just social engineering or SIM swaps anymore.

This isn’t an isolated incident. A growing number of high-profile investors have been targeted offline, underscoring the risks of displaying crypto wealth publicly. Digital asset lawyer Sasha Hodder noted on X (formerly Twitter), “Crypto theft is evolving. It’s not just social engineering or SIM swaps anymore.”
What This Means for Crypto Investors
For both beginners and seasoned holders, the message is clear: your digital assets are only as secure as your physical safety and operational security (OpSec). The rise in violent crypto crimes suggests that investors should rethink how they talk about and store their assets. Avoiding public exposure, using multi-signature wallets, and keeping cold storage offline are now more critical than ever.
Meanwhile, law enforcement is catching up. As more crypto crimes are prosecuted at the state and federal levels, we can expect stiffer penalties and more digital forensics in play. Still, prevention remains the best defense.
