Nexon, Korea’s top game studio and creator of this game, is bringing the game to Avalanche.
Known for breaking the mold in the early 2000s, MapleStory pioneered the free-to-play model and became a global phenomenon. More than twenty years later, it’s evolving again—this time with blockchain technology at its core.
User-Created Worlds Meet Web3 Incentives
The original game allowed players to customize characters and explore sprawling landscapes. But, its Web3 reboot will take that one step further. Players will be able to build their worlds and, thanks to blockchain, be rewarded for their creations.
That reward system is made possible by Avalanche’s “Subnet” architecture. A Subnet is a customizable blockchain that can be fine-tuned for a specific use case. In this case, MapleStory Universe gets its own high-speed, scalable chain that supports game logic, transactions, and digital ownership—all with low fees and fast finality.

For example, Web2 games like Roblox and Minecraft have already shown how powerful user-generated content can be. Avalanche’s blockchain adds a new layer: verifiable ownership and rewards. This model could change how developers build games and who benefits from them.
A Growing Avalanche of Game Studios
Nexon’s move to Avalanche follows a growing trend. Studios like Gunzilla (behind Off the Grid), Shrapnel, and esports giant TSM are also building on Avalanche. According to Messari, Avalanche Subnets saw a 116% rise in monthly active users in early 2024—proof that game studios are paying attention.
Angela Son, Partnership Lead at MapleStory Universe, said the Avalanche partnership ensures a “stable and complete blockchain ecosystem” to support dApps and games like MapleStory N. Ava Labs’ Ed Chang added, “This could onboard millions on-chain.”
